How to Recall Email in Outlook (and Replace It)

Directions vary slightly between the different versions of Outlook. Below are instructions for recalling an email in the desktop and web versions.
  • Open Outlook and go to the Sent Items folder.
  • Double-click the sent message you want to recall to open it in a separate window.
  • If you're using the latest version of Outlook for Windows or you're on the web version, select Recall Message in the toolbar and then choose OK. Skip down to Step 7.For older versions of Outlook, go to the Message tab, select the Actions dropdown arrow, and choose Recall This Message.
  • In the dialog box, select one of the following:
  • Delete unread copies of this message to recall the message.
  • Delete unread copies and replace with a new message to replace the message with a new one. Select OK.
  • If you selected Delete unread copies and replace with a new message, modify the original message and select Send.
  • You'll receive an Outlook notification message regarding the success or failure of your attempt to retract or replace the email.

Outlook.com, Hotmail.com, Live.com, and Msn.com Email Addresses

If you have an @outlook.com, @hotmail.com, @live.com, or @msn.com email account, you'll have to prepare in advance for email mistakes because you can’t recall them. What you can do, though, is to set your account to always delay sending your emails and automatically surface an Undo Send prompt right after you send. Go to Settings > TempMailEx > Compose and Reply > Undo Send. You’ll see a slider that you can set from 0 to 10 seconds, which is how long each message you send can be delayed. Set it to your choice and click Save.
